At House of Jaipur, we have a deep love and fascination for Indian art and craft, particularly when it comes to furniture making. Our journey began with our admiration for the ancient inlay crafts that have been passed down through generations. We are dedicated to bringing these traditional techniques to modern designs, creating unique and stunning furniture pieces that are sure to impress and inspire.

Our focus turned towards the enchanting techniques of bone inlay and mother of pearl inlay, practices that flourish in the small corners of Rajasthan, India, and nowhere else in the world. The artisan precision we encountered in this specialized region left us in awe. It became the inspiration that fueled our mission to bring this unique craftsmanship to a global audience.

Creating a masterpiece

Creating inlay furniture is a meticulous process that requires attention to detail and skilled craftsmanship. Here's a refined version of the process in four steps:

01

Give shape to mop, wood & bone

Mother of pearl, bone & wood is carefully selected and prepared for the inlay process. It's then cut into small pieces, often resembling leaves, motifs, or other intricate patterns. This cutting is done with precision to ensure uniformity and desired shapes.

02

Inlaying Process

Skilled artisans meticulously place these small pieces of bone or mother of pearl onto the wooden structure of the furniture. This step requires patience and precision as the pieces are arranged to form the desired patterns or designs.

03

Colour Enhancement

Once the inlay work is completed, the furniture piece may undergo a coloring process to enhance its visual appeal. This could involve the application of dyes or pigments to add vibrant colors or highlight certain areas of the inlay design. The coloring process is done carefully to ensure that it complements the overall aesthetics of the piece.

04

Finishing Touches

After the coloring process, the furniture undergoes finishing touches and polishing to achieve a smooth and glossy surface. This step involves sanding the surface to remove any imperfections, and finally, adding hardware such as knobs or handles if required.
